LSD kann an Serotonin-, Dopamin- und Adrenalinrezeptoren binden. Es wirkt damit sowohl prä- als auch postsynaptisch. Präsynaptisch kann es die Ausschüttung von Transmittern wie Serotonin hemmen, postsynaptisch kann es aktivierend oder hemmend wirken, je nachdem, welcher Rezeptortyp betroffen ist.
